PhD title: Development of a robotic system for surgical bone grinding tasks in a constrained environment

Biography

During a final year mechatronics group project, we designed a proof-of-concept of a laparoscopic surgical system that is both ergonomic and cost-effective. This project introduced me to robotics and showed what such technology can bring to healthcare. After graduating from Cardiff University with an MEng in Medical Engineering with First Class Honours, I wanted to be involved in the design process of medical devices, from prototyping to commercialisation. The outcomes of the mechatronic project and my interest in designing medical devices were key motivations in my application to the FARSCOPE programme.

My research will focus on the design of a robot-assisted skull-base neurosurgery system that is not only ergonomic and cost-effective, but also safe for both surgeon and patient.
