PhD Project Title: Novel Proprioceptive Sensors for Soft Robots using Morphological Computation

Research Group: Soft Robotics

Biography

Biological systems exhibit remarkable sensing capabilities by using a widely distributed sensor network and a tight coupling between body and environment. The result are seemingly highly robust and adaptive solutions. To enable the next generation of embodied robots with similar capabilities, we need to develop novel sensing and computational technologies. In this work novel proprioceptive sensors will be built based on the theory of embodied intelligence and physical reservoir computing. The intention of the developed sensors in this work is to bring the sensory capabilities of soft robots closer to that seen in nature and, importantly, to not be confined to a single morphology. Potential applications range from human-computer interaction, artificial skin, generic sensors to be attached to various machines and humans and sensing for aquatic and terrestrial soft robotics.
